A Short History of Pure West
When Juan Carlos and Victor were children, in a simpler, quieter time, they loved to read comics. One day a camera fell into their laps through some divine providence. (Mostly because their parents had finagled one on loan from some other family.) Their first movie was inevitably a mega Marvel crossover. Victor was Hercules and Juan was the Punisher. In later films they would be X-men, and sometimes even the Avengers. The only constant was the nefarious super villains, always played by the barbeque. The brothers made many homegrown videos over the next decade, and tortured friends with forced marathon screenings. Later on Juan barely got into a magnet program at Eastern Middle School. The initial Pure West posse was formed there amidst spanish classes and girlfriend breakups. Chris and Jamie thusly joined Victor and Juan to make movies (that made even less sense) on the weekends. They also watched and quoted a ludicrous amount of 'The Simpsons'. In fact, to this day, it is almost a pre-requisite as a core member to have near perfect knowledge of all Simpsons trivia. There are rumors that the company name has deep roots in 'The Simpsons'... but we digress. College came quickly. Juan went to NYU for film where he met Peter Brauer. Upon graduating they started working on reality shows. That didn't last for too long, and soon they made Pure West into a real corporation. The newly founded company focused exclusively on industrial video production. They picked up a few clients, and tried to make a meager living out of it. As fate would have it, everyone wanted to make the movies they wanted to make. The idea about a documentary on MMORPG's came up for various reasons (check out the press kit), and soon they were ready to pursue their first feature film. Victor left his job as a teacher, and decided to join the company full time. He even turned down an opportunity to go to Columbia University's graduate program for screenwriting! Second Skin began production in late January, 2006. After two years, 400 hundred hours of footage, and your typical starving artist antics - they finished it. The film premiered at SXSW Film Festival in March, and has been doing the festival circuit all around the US and Canada. They are literally days away from signing a contract with their distributor, at which point they will announce it. Nowadays you can find Pure West creating web animations, freelancing, marketing 'Second Skin', giving life their best shot, and expanding Pure West to web development. Chris (one of the original Eastern Middle School guys) started working full time with the company in the last few months as well.
